Honey bees do far more than make the delicious, golden honey we love. As they travel from flower to flower collecting nectar and pollen, they also provide essential pollination services that help produce many of the fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds we enjoy every day. From almonds, apples and blueberries to cucumbers, melons and squash, honey bees play an important role in supporting a diverse food supply, thriving ecosystems and productive farms.
National / World Honey Bee Day is a chance to celebrate honey bees, the dedicated beekeepers who care for them, and the vital role they play in agriculture and our everyday lives. It’s also the perfect reminder that even small actions can make a meaningful difference. As we prepare to celebrate, consider these simple ways you can help support honey bees and other pollinators in your own community:
1. Plant bee-friendly flowers and herbs. Add a variety of flowering plants to your garden, yard or containers to provide nectar and pollen throughout the growing season.
2. Reduce pesticide use. Limit the use of chemicals and pesticides, especially while plants are in bloom, to help create a safer environment for pollinators.
3. Provide fresh water. Place a shallow dish or basin of clean water outside with marbles or rocks so bees have a safe place to land while they drink.
4. Support pollinator organizations.
Donate to organizations working to protect honey bees and other pollinators through research, education and habitat conservation.
5. Buy honey. Choosing honey supports the beekeepers who care for honey bees and helps sustain the important work they do year-round.
